Dog & Beth may have lost their battle against Kathy Gifford and her family on one of the biggest nights of “Celebrity Family Feud” last week, but the Chapmans were the winners in a Celebrity Cook-Off at “Flavors of Honolulu” (www.flavorsofhonolulu.org) on Friday, June 27th. The annual food, wine, entertainment and family fun event on the Honolulu City Hall grounds, is a fundraiser for Abilities Unlimited, which provides job training and placement for disabled individuals in Hawaii.
The Chapmans cooked off against Honolulu’s popular City Prosecutor, Peter Carlisle, and his wife, Judy. The teams were given a “mystery basket” of ingredients and told they were to make salsa. They had to use all of the ingredients in the basket, but also had access to a pantry at their discretion. Over the next half-hour, between chopping tomatoes, onions, cilantro and numerous other ingredients in front of an SRO audience, the teams exchanged lighthearted banter and displays of bravado that kept the audience excitedly laughing and cheering. Flashbulbs went off constantly as fans, many of whom waited hours to get the best seats in the cook-off tent, took photos non-stop. A couple from Canada, one of the first to arrive, said they planned their vacation around this event to meet Dog & Beth, the stars of their favorite TV show.
Needless-to-say, the lead chef on the “Dog the Bounty Hunter” team was Beth, although Dog did assist with chopping and mixing, as instructed by his wife. Dog also gave away personalized copies of his New York Times Best-selling book, “You Can Run But You Can’t Hide,” to 2 lucky audience members who answered his questions correctly during an impromptu contest on stage.
Then, the moment of truth had arrived.
The five judges voted for the Chapmans’ salsa as the winner. When emcee Max Sword announced the winners, the crowd went wild! Of course, the Carlisles were great sports and congratulated the Chapmans, although the prosecutor did joke to the judges, “I’m getting all of your names!”
Dog & Beth remained on-site to do interviews with members of Abilities Unlimited’s media team, a special program for individuals with disabilities to learn media skills like camera operation, on-camera interviews, and editing. After the interviews, the Chapmans stayed for almost two hours to accommodate autograph and photo requests from their fans.
The Chapmans postponed their trip to Denver to make the fundraiser, and left the next day, instead. That makes them winners in anyone’s book.
