Why, when we are challenged to survive, do we give ourselves permission to truly live?

December 18, 2007

My enchantment with the Chapman Family was born out of their survival stories and open hearts. I am also a survivor; and feel a kinship with others who have blazed through the tough roads in life.

As most humans do, I derive strength from others. I observe how other people survive and cope-- and then I am able to relate it to my own life. Dog and Beth have been a tremendous inspiration to me, not only as survivors- but also as good hearted human beings. The love that is shared within that family is something I try to incorporate into my own life and the "keep your head up" attitude refreshes my courage. I am also a survivor, and completely turned tragedy into triumph. When I was 17 years old I was in a automobile accident that left my legs totally paralyzed. This was in my senior year of high school, but I was determined to graduate on time. After 5 months in rehab (where I learned my survival skills and kept up with my school work) I graduated high school and began attending UC Berkeley. I have since graduated with a bachelors in Political Science and a minor in African American Studies. I am now in a masters program at USC for occupational therapy.. because I feel it is important for me to help other teenagers who have acquired spinal cord injuries. I have learned so much from sitting down these last 6 years, and would never exchange those lessons if given the opportunity. Easy isn't a true accomplishment, but turning hard into easy is an experienced to be cherished and proud of. And this is the main reason why I have so much respect and honor for Dog Chapman. Survivors are what make life interesting, and surviving is what makes life worth living.
